Quality control during membrane protein purification for cryo-EM

June 25, 2025 Léa Valla

As membrane proteins are critical for cellular function and account for over half of all drug targets, it is important we gain a molecular-level understanding of their structure and function. Despite this, membrane proteins represent <4% experimentally determined structures, largely because it remains challenging to purify samples with sufficient yield and homogeneity for this purpose.

In this webinar, Dr. Melanie McDowell, Research Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute of Biophysics outlines the bottlenecks associated with membrane protein purification and strategies that can be used to obtain detergent-solubilised protein. She also discusses quality control of purified membrane protein samples, with a particular emphasis on cryo-EM as a downstream application.

Watch it to learn about:

  • The bottlenecks of membrane protein purification
  • Strategies to obtain detergent solubilised membrane proteins
  • Prometheus™ Panta, a tool for high-precision protein characterization, for quality control of membrane proteins in detergents.
