Pick what's fundable
Securing funding for your research is tough, especially in places with limited funding like
developing countries. The decision to choose a research topic that will attract funding—
hopefully from several sources—is also a good strategy.
I was very pragmatic. [I thought] where do I have more
possibilities of winning my grants? Why did I think like that?
Because when you move, in my case from Scotland to Chile,
you need to open a door. And if you do it right, then you can
get more grants and do what you're more passionate about.
Alejandro Rojas
Alejandro Rojas decided his initial research topic based on its
fundability. When he decided to return to his home country of Chile
to start his lab, he knew he would need a lot of funding to cover the
project he envisioned.
