Don't burn bridges with your
postdoc lab
Moving forward with your postdoc topic implies that there will be another group doing
similar research. To avoid potential conflicts in the future, it is always good to talk to your
postdoc supervisor and define the scope of the research that you will be doing. This talk
could be the start of a good collaboration.
I shared my potential research topic with my postdoc supervisor. We
talked this through before I le , and he was fine with it. We try to be
open and complementary. In that way, we know what each of us is
working on. We've had a very ethical and honest relationship, which
allows us to collaborate and move our projects forward instead of
competing. Talking about and establishing the limits [between both
labs] is essential, so you have support in keeping your research
project going at least during the initial years of your lab.
Fabiola Osorio
Fabiola Osorio did a relatively independent and autonomous project in her
postdoc lab. She was very interested in the topic and wanted to continue it in
her own lab, but not before discussing it with her supervisor.
