37 7 Build a reliable network for support throughout your career The biggest problem shared by many early career scientists is the lack of career support. While some institutions and funding agencies offer training in lab administration and leadership, it's still more the exception than the rule. If you feel alone, it's essential that you seek help from people that can offer advice and support during this process. Here's how to do that: Stay close to your previous mentors. There's an old Chinese proverb that says "To know the road ahead, ask those coming back." Your mentor's knowledge about the science environ- ment and their experience in starting a lab can help you through current and future chal- lenges. Keep in touch about not just your struggles but also your wins. Rely on your colleagues. Whether they are new PIs starting their labs or experienced scien- tists, their insights and different points of view can be very helpful. Meet regularly with your official mentor. If you're lucky enough to be assigned a mentor from your new department, it is essential to establish a relationship based on trust and respect. Get to know them to get the most out of this relationship.
