Renovating space
Sometimes, the space may need to be renovated to improve its conditions or to change its layout
in order to meet your needs. However, renovations are expensive, so before you decide to go for
it, make sure there's enough money in your lab's budget to get it done.
You can imagine that the lab you'll receive can be small, ugly or need
some renovations. The shortcomings of starting your lab can be beyond
your imagination. The current incentives in Chile to decentralize science
allowed me to renovate the lab space. I won a grant that would give twice
the amount of money for establishing in a distant region, away from the
capital. That's how I was able to start a major renovation process.

Alejandro Rojas received a large but very old shared space which needed some
serious renovation, from replacing the roof and foundation to changing the whole
electrical wiring.
