14 Don't burn bridges with your postdoc lab Moving forward with your postdoc topic implies that there will be another group doing similar research. To avoid potential conflicts in the future, it is always good to talk to your postdoc supervisor and define the scope of the research that you will be doing. This talk could be the start of a good collaboration. I shared my potential research topic with my postdoc supervisor. We talked this through before I le , and he was fine with it. We try to be open and complementary. In that way, we know what each of us is working on. We've had a very ethical and honest relationship, which allows us to collaborate and move our projects forward instead of competing. Talking about and establishing the limits [between both labs] is essential, so you have support in keeping your research project going at least during the initial years of your lab. Fabiola Osorio Fabiola Osorio did a relatively independent and autonomous project in her postdoc lab. She was very interested in the topic and wanted to continue it in her own lab, but not before discussing it with her supervisor. "
