SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent of COVID-19, has an ssRNA genome of almost 30kb that encodes for a total of 26 proteins. Among the four structural viral protein, in particular the S protein stands out. The S protein protrudes from the spherical virion and gives it its characteristic appearance. It is also crucial for the virus’ interaction with its host cells. Furthermore, the S protein is the main target for most SARS-CoV-2 vaccines. As such, mutations in this protein can severely impact the efficacy of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines.
