Effect of different SARS-CoV-2 variants on COVID 19 assays and vaccines

June 29, 2021

SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent of COVID-19, has an ssRNA genome of almost 30kb that encodes for a total of 26 proteins. Among the four structural viral protein, in particular the S protein stands out. The S protein protrudes from the spherical virion and gives it its characteristic appearance. It is also crucial for the virus’ interaction with its host cells. Furthermore, the S protein is the main target for most SARS-CoV-2 vaccines. As such, mutations in this protein can severely impact the efficacy of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines.

In this webinar, Dr. Stefan Pellenz Product Manager from Antibodies online and Dr. Andreas Langer, R&D Scientist at NanoTemper Technologies, will review known SARS-CoV-2 S protein mutations, discuss their potential effect on antibody binding, and illustrate this effect on a well characterized anti-S protein antibody.
