8 While biologics are derived from natural cellular byproducts, it is generally neither cost- nor time- efficient to extract the biologic from its source. Where do Biologics come from? Increasing the efficacy and safety of biological therapeutics is a central part of biologics research. Once a byproduct demonstrates potential value as a therapeutic, the next step is to find ways to produce it cost- effectively in vitro. This o en involves recombinant protein expression, extraction, and purification. It may also involve modifying the native protein sequence in order to improve its expression rate, enzymatic efficiency, target affinity, or long-term stability. These are crucial considerations that can significantly improve the return on investment in the development of a biologic.
