Do what you like, with a mix of what you know The most common choice among new PIs is to continue with their postdoc research topic. You've spent years on a project that allowed you to build a network and gain enough knowledge and experience. Those are powerful reasons to choose this path, especially if you're interested in it and feel confident that your inputs will increase knowledge in that field. 10 The topic of my lab is a continuation of my postdoc. I really liked my postdoc because it was based on a very interesting and important topic [cell division]. In my postdoc lab, I was the only one with expertise on structural biology and I realized there were a lot of good targets [in the topic of cell division] and lots of unanswered questions that I could answer with my skills…and that's basically what I concentrated on. Nikolina Sekulic Nikolina Sekulic chose to continue her postdoc topic in her lab. Her interest combined with her expertise in a particular methodology allowed her to penetrate this field from a whole new perspective. She applied what she liked and what she knew. "
