Share equipment
Deciding to either use another lab's equipment or purchase your own comes down to your personal
preference (and, of course, budget). While sharing equipment can be a good choice, it may come with some
associated costs. Here are some interesting insights in this regard.
You need to be very smart and collaborative. If someone else has
equipment that you need, you can talk to the person in charge to
see whether you can use it and thus avoid purchasing it right away.
You need to prioritize the purchase of equipment that you are really
going to need. Here is something that helped me a lot: instead of
investing in equipment that many researchers had, I invested my
money in upgrading a collaborator's one. Specifically, I added filters
and detection systems to a colleague's cell sorter because that would
greatly improve my research.

There are a lot of people that have similar research and you can find
common needs to buy one machine for three labs. In that case, your
budget will not suffer from buying big equipment, and you have the
benefit of collaboration.
