33 Share equipment Deciding to either use another lab's equipment or purchase your own comes down to your personal preference (and, of course, budget). While sharing equipment can be a good choice, it may come with some associated costs. Here are some interesting insights in this regard. You need to be very smart and collaborative. If someone else has equipment that you need, you can talk to the person in charge to see whether you can use it and thus avoid purchasing it right away. You need to prioritize the purchase of equipment that you are really going to need. Here is something that helped me a lot: instead of investing in equipment that many researchers had, I invested my money in upgrading a collaborator's one. Specifically, I added filters and detection systems to a colleague's cell sorter because that would greatly improve my research.
