32 Use core facilities Being successful in starting a lab requires the ability to recognize and seize opportunities. One example is using equipment and supplies available at your institution to support your research — namely core facilities. Take advantage of these places as a great way to save money. It's really important to choose a department or university that at least has the basic, necessary equipment that you will need because you can't spend all your money on that. You should not only talk to people [at the institution] and let them tell you what they have, but instead you should actually go there physically because you can be really surprised sometimes. Szymanski " In terms of what we choose to purchase versus what we can do in core facilities, it is a combination of how immediately we would need it versus how much it would cost to have it in our lab. Miljan Simonovic "
