9 Plan (6–12 months before deadline) Define your idea, generate hypotheses, define aims, and devise experimental approach Generate preliminary data Identify grants and deadlines, determine eligibility, and read proposal instructions Contact grants administrators in your organization and communicate intent to apply Assemble committee of peers and advisors to provide feedback and support throughout application process For Career Development Awards, do you need a mentor? Letter of reference? If so, be sure your mentor and referees are on board. Write (up to 6 months before deadline, depending on type of grant) Create initial dra of proposal, writing clearly and concisely, addressing requirements of each section Obtain critical feedback from committee and revise accordingly Prepare budget and "non-science" parts Have final version ready 1 month before deadline. Request feedback from committee on the grant proposal and letters of recommendation from referees. Final proofreading 1–2 weeks before deadline by you and someone who hasn't read it previously Submit proposal Submit (up to 12 months after) Track your application Submit updates where relevant Anticipate reviews and start addressing predicted criticisms to be prepared for the possibility of resubmission Here's a handy checklist you can print and post at your desk to help you stay on track.
